Dominican Republic eSIM for tourists and travelers

eSpeedz Dominican Republic eSIM plans start at $17.99 and connect to Altice, one of the country's main mobile networks, covering Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and the Samaná Peninsula towns. Your QR code arrives by email in minutes, you install it before you fly, and the plan starts when you connect in the DR.

Resort wifi stops at the lobby. Take your data to the beach, on the catamaran to Saona and out to dinner in Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial.

Staying connected in the Dominican Republic

A lot of DR trips start and end at an all-inclusive in Punta Cana or Bávaro, and it's tempting to assume the resort wifi will cover you. It usually does in the lobby and your room. It's less dependable at the far end of a big property, on an excursion bus, or when you're trying to find the friend who booked the next resort over. Leaning on a US carrier's daily roaming pass for a week by the pool adds up, while a prepaid eSIM is one fixed cost.

Rides are where data matters most. Uber works well in Santo Domingo, and Las Américas airport has signposted Uber pickup zones. Punta Cana is more complicated. Local taxi groups are strong there, and app drivers can't simply pull up at the terminal curb, though the Uber app does let you request a licensed taxi from Punta Cana airport. Either way, you'll want working data the moment you land. Excursion companies, private drivers and restaurants mostly confirm everything by WhatsApp.

If you head to the Samaná Peninsula, expect signal in Las Terrenas and Samaná town, but not at some of the best spots. Playa Rincón, Playa Frontón and the El Limón waterfall trail have little to no coverage. That's part of their charm, just download offline maps and agree on your pickup time with your driver or boat captain before you lose signal.

How much data do you need?

A week at a Punta Cana resort with WhatsApp, a few rides and social posts from the beach usually fits in 3GB, since the resort wifi handles the heavy stuff. If you're moving around, staying in Santo Domingo or road-tripping to Samaná, 5GB for a week or two is more comfortable. Remote workers, heavy video posters and anyone sharing a hotspot with a partner should look at 10GB or 20GB.

Best time to visit

December to April is the most popular time, with drier, slightly cooler weather and calm seas. From roughly mid-January to March, humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay, and whale watching trips run from Samaná town. Hurricane season runs from June through November and is most active from about August to October, so travel insurance is worth considering then.

Entry tip: Every traveler entering or leaving the Dominican Republic must complete the free e-Ticket form at eticket.migracion.gob.do, with separate forms for arrival and departure. Keep the QR code handy at the airport. Official source.

Dominican Republic travel tips

Fill in the e-Ticket before both flights
The Dominican Republic's e-Ticket is a free online form required for entering and leaving the country. Complete it at eticket.migracion.gob.do and keep the QR code on your phone. You'll need a separate one for your departure.
Plan your Punta Cana airport transfer
Because app pickups at Punta Cana airport are restricted, many travelers prebook a transfer or use the taxi option inside the Uber app. In Santo Domingo, regular Uber pickups are easy.
Save your excursion contacts in WhatsApp
Saona Island trips, whale watching boats and private drivers almost always communicate through WhatsApp. Keep data on so pickup changes reach you.
Go offline for Samaná's best beaches
Download maps of the Samaná Peninsula before visiting Playa Rincón, Playa Frontón or El Limón, where there's little or no signal.

Dominican Republic eSIM questions

Not if you'll never leave your resort, but most people do. An eSIM keeps WhatsApp, Uber and maps working on excursions, at the beach and between resorts, without paying daily roaming fees.
Yes, Uber works well in Santo Domingo and other cities. At Punta Cana airport, app pickups are restricted, but the Uber app can match you with a licensed taxi there.
Yes, you'll have signal in the towns of the Samaná Peninsula. Some remote beaches and the El Limón waterfall have little or no coverage, so download offline maps first.
No, it's a data-only plan. You can still call and text through WhatsApp, which is how most Dominican drivers, guides and restaurants communicate, as well as iMessage and FaceTime.
For a resort-based week, 3GB is usually enough. If you're exploring Santo Domingo or Samaná, or using rideshare daily, 5GB gives you more breathing room.
It's a free online form that every traveler fills in for arrival and again for departure, combining the old immigration and customs paperwork. You complete it at eticket.migracion.gob.do and show the QR code at the airport.
Install it a day or two before your flight while you're on wifi at home. It won't start using any of its validity until it connects to a network in the DR.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for the Dominican Republic. The largest plan is 20GB for 30 days at $104.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
