Vietnam eSIM for tourists and travelers

Vietnam eSIM plans from eSpeedz start at $7.99 and connect to MobiFone and Vietnamobile, covering Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and the main travel routes in between. Your QR code arrives by email within minutes, you install it before departure, and the plan only starts once your phone connects to a network in Vietnam.

Vietnam runs on apps. Grab or Xanh SM for rides, Google Maps for the Old Quarter's tangle of streets, Google Translate for the menu. Land with all of it already working.

Staying connected in Vietnam

Most people don't do Vietnam in a long weekend. The classic route runs north to south over two or three weeks, from Hanoi and Ha Long Bay down through Hue and Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City. Paying a US carrier's daily roaming fee for that whole stretch adds up to a lot of money for something you can sort out once, in advance, with a single prepaid plan.

Local SIMs are sold at kiosks in the arrivals halls at Noi Bai in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. You'll need your original passport for registration, and airport prices tend to run higher than in town. If you'd rather walk straight out to the taxi rank, an eSIM installed at home saves that whole step.

Getting around is where data really earns its keep. Grab is everywhere, and Xanh SM, the all-electric taxi and motorbike service, has become a big player in Vietnamese cities. Gojek pulled out of Vietnam in September 2024, so older blog posts telling you to download it are out of date. Hotels and homestays are generous with wifi, and nearly every cafe has a password on the wall, but you'll be on mobile data in the back of a ride, on a sleeper train, or halfway around a mountain loop where the signal gets thin.

How much data do you need?

Vietnam is a heavy maps-and-rides destination, so budget a little more than you might elsewhere. A one-week city break in Hanoi or Saigon is comfortable on 3GB to 5GB. For the full two-week north-to-south trip with daily Grab rides, translation and photo sharing, 10GB is a good fit. Remote workers and anyone who streams on long bus and train rides should go for 20GB. Offline maps and downloading shows on hotel wifi stretch any plan further.

Best time to visit

Vietnam is long and thin, so the weather depends on where you are. The north, including Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, is pleasant in spring and autumn and surprisingly cool from December to February. The central coast around Hoi An and Hue is at its best from roughly February to August and gets its heaviest rain in autumn. The south, including Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc, is dry from about December to April.

Entry tip: US citizens need a visa for Vietnam. Apply for an e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn before you go. It's open to all nationalities and covers stays of up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Official source.

Vietnam travel tips

Get your e-visa from the official portal
Apply at evisa.gov.vn, the government site. Plenty of agency sites look official and charge extra for the same visa. Approval usually takes a few working days, so don't leave it to the last minute.
Compare Grab and Xanh SM
Both apps show the fare upfront, which beats negotiating on the street. Xanh SM's fleet is entirely electric, and in big cities it's often a quick pickup.
Download offline maps for the north
If you're riding the Ha Giang loop or trekking around Sapa, save Google Maps offline areas before you go. Mountain passes and valleys can lose signal for a while.
Expect Zalo
Zalo is Vietnam's go-to messaging app. Some homestays, tailors in Hoi An and tour operators prefer it, though most tourist businesses are happy on WhatsApp too.

Vietnam eSIM questions

It's not required, but having data from the moment you land makes Vietnam much easier. Ride-hailing, translation and maps all depend on it. An eSIM skips the passport registration line at the airport kiosk.
It runs on MobiFone and Vietnamobile. Both cover the big cities and main tourist routes, and coverage gets patchier in remote mountain areas of the far north.
No, it's a data-only plan with no +84 number. You can still call and text through WhatsApp, Zalo, iMessage or FaceTime, which is how most travelers stay in touch anyway.
About 10GB suits most two-week trips with daily rides, maps and social media. If you stream video or tether a laptop, 20GB gives you room to breathe.
Yes, Grab and Xanh SM both work over mobile data. Set up your account before you leave so any SMS verification code comes to your regular number.
You'll have signal in towns and along much of the route, but expect gaps on mountain passes and in deep valleys. Download offline maps and let your homestay know your plans for the day.
Yes. US citizens aren't on Vietnam's visa-exempt list, so you'll need an e-visa, which allows stays of up to 90 days with single or multiple entry.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Vietnam. The largest plan is 20GB for 30 days at $41.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
