Prepaid eSIM for China · China Unicom

China eSIM for tourists and business travelers

An eSpeedz China eSIM starts at $9.99 for prepaid, data-only service on China Unicom across mainland China, with plans from 5GB to 50GB. You get a QR code by email, install it before you leave, and it activates when your phone connects in China.

In China, your phone is your wallet, your map and your taxi stand. Arrive connected so Alipay, Didi and Amap work from the moment you clear immigration.

Staying connected in China

China is close to cashless in big cities. Street food stalls, metro ticket machines, museums and taxis all expect you to scan a QR code with Alipay or WeChat Pay, and both apps now let visitors link a foreign Visa or Mastercard. That means the app needs data at the exact moment you're paying, often with a queue behind you. Public wifi in cafes, malls and stations often wants a Chinese phone number for an SMS login, so it's not something to count on.

Then there's the Great Firewall. Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook are blocked on local Chinese internet, including hotel wifi. Many travel eSIMs send your data out through Hong Kong, and when that routing is in place those apps generally keep working without a VPN. Our network partner lists Hong Kong as the exit point for these China plans, but routing can change and access isn't something we control, so treat it as likely rather than guaranteed. Save offline copies of bookings and contacts, and have a backup way to reach people.

The local apps are honestly better for getting around anyway. Amap (Gaode) has far more accurate maps and transit than Google in China, Didi is the ride-hailing app everyone uses, and Trip.com or the official 12306 site handle high-speed train tickets in English.

How much data do you need?

Your phone does more work in China than in most countries, because maps, payments, translation and ride-hailing all run on data. Plan on 5GB for a one-week trip if you're mostly in cities with hotel wifi as backup. For two weeks, or if you rely on video calls home, 10GB to 20GB is safer. Since public wifi often needs a Chinese number, budget as if you'll be on mobile data most of the day.

Best time to visit

April to May and September to October bring the most comfortable weather across most of the country. Avoid the national holiday week starting October 1 and Chinese New Year (early February in 2027) if you can, since trains and attractions get extremely busy. Summers are hot and humid in the south and east, and northern winters are dry and cold.

Entry tip: US citizens qualify for China's 240-hour visa-free transit when flying in to a designated port and on to a third country or region with a confirmed onward ticket. Foreigners can also complete the arrival card online for free before landing. Official source.

China travel tips

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay at home
Download Alipay and WeChat, verify your identity and link your card before you leave, while your home number can still receive verification texts easily. Payments of 200 yuan or less have no cross-border fee, while larger ones currently carry a 3% fee.
Fill in the online arrival card
Since November 2025, foreigners can complete China's arrival card online for free through the National Immigration Administration website or the WeChat and Alipay mini programs. Doing it before you land saves time at the immigration hall, and there are machines at the airport if you forget.
Use Amap and Didi, not Google Maps
Google Maps data in China is often out of date and its locations can be offset from where things really are. Amap has accurate walking, metro and bus directions. Didi works inside Alipay too, so you can order a car without another app.
Download offline translation
English signage is good in major airports and metros but drops off fast elsewhere. Download an offline language pack in your translation app before you go so you can read menus even when your connection is slow.

China eSIM questions

It often does. Many travel eSIMs route data through Hong Kong, which keeps Google, WhatsApp and Instagram reachable without a VPN. We can't guarantee it, since routing can change and blocking isn't under our control, so check when you land and keep a backup plan.
Only in transit. US citizens can use the 240-hour visa-free transit policy if they arrive at a designated port and leave for a third country or region within 10 days, with a confirmed onward ticket. A US to Beijing to Hong Kong itinerary qualifies, but a round trip to and from the US does not.
Yes. Both apps let visitors link a foreign Visa, Mastercard or Amex and pay at almost any QR code. Set them up before your trip, and carry a little cash for the rare place that won't take them.
No, it's data-only. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime work over data when your connection exits outside mainland China, and WeChat works either way. Keep your home SIM active for bank and app verification texts.
This plan is built for mainland China. Hong Kong and Macau have their own networks, so if they're on your route, look at our plan that covers mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau together.
Around 10GB is a comfortable amount for 10 days. Payments and maps don't use much, but you'll be on mobile data more than usual because public wifi is hard to log into as a visitor.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for China. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $82.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
