The best warm places to travel this winter (2026-27)

Hurricane season is over, the seaweed is gone, and half the planet is in summer. Here's where to find real heat between December and March, what's on while you're there, and the entry rules that changed this year.

Winter sun is having a moment. Bangkok and Rio are among the most booked cities on the planet for 2026, and the Caribbean's high season is filling up fast. The good news is that December through March is genuinely the best window for most warm destinations, not just the most popular one. Hurricane season ends November 30, sargassum seaweed mostly disappears from Caribbean beaches until spring, and the southern hemisphere is in full summer.

The catch is that everyone else knows this too. So this guide is about picking the right place for the right week, booking smart, and not getting tripped up by the entry rules that changed in 2026.

Quick picks: Best beach with no passport needed (US travelers): Puerto Rico. Best wildlife: Baja California's gray whales or Michoacán's monarch butterflies. Best party: Rio or Barranquilla Carnival in February. Best value: Thailand or Colombia. Most reliable dry weather: Costa Rica's Guanacaste coast.

Mexico

Best December to March · Short flights from most of the US

Mexico is the easiest winter escape for most North Americans. It's close, flights are frequent, and you can pick from three completely different trips.

The Mexican Caribbean (Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen)

This is peak season for the Yucatán coast, and for good reason. Seas are calm, humidity drops, and December through March is the most reliable stretch for clear water. Sargassum, the brown seaweed that piles up on these beaches, typically peaks between late May and August and is rarely a problem in winter.

Don't skip the Visitax. Quintana Roo (the state that includes Cancún and Tulum) charges every international visitor over age 4 a tourist tax of 285 pesos, roughly $15 to $17. Hotels don't collect it, and it's checked by QR code when you fly out. Pay it on the official state portal before your trip and save the receipt on your phone.

Baja California for whale season

Every winter, gray whales swim down from the Arctic to give birth in Baja's warm lagoons. The 2026-27 season runs roughly December to mid-April. For the famous "friendly" encounters, where mothers bring calves right up to small boats, head to San Ignacio Lagoon or Puerto Adolfo López Mateos between mid-February and mid-March. Los Cabos and La Paz are the easy bases, with humpback whales offshore and warm, dry weather all season.

Michoacán for the monarch butterflies

Millions of monarch butterflies spend the winter in the fir forests west of Mexico City. The sanctuaries usually open in mid to late November and close at the end of March, with February the peak. El Rosario and Sierra Chincua in Michoacán are the main ones. Entry is around 150 pesos for adults. It's a high-altitude day trip, so bring a jacket. It's warm in the sun and cold in the shade.

If you're combining Mexico with the US or Canada, our Mexico eSIM plans run on Telcel, the country's biggest network, which also covers the sanctuaries and most of Baja's towns.

The Caribbean

Best mid-December to April · Peak prices at Christmas and Presidents' Day

Winter is the Caribbean's high season. The weather is dry and breezy, the water is clear, and the 2026 sargassum outlook (which predicted a heavy summer year) points to clean beaches through the winter months.

Island hopping? Phone plans in the Caribbean are almost always country by country, so a SIM bought in Jamaica won't work in Barbados. Our Caribbean eSIM covers 20+ islands and nearby countries on one QR code, including Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Grenada, the Cayman Islands, and Turks and Caicos.
Heading somewhere warm? Land connected.

Install your eSIM at home before you fly. Data only starts when you arrive. Mexico plans start from $14.99, and one Caribbean eSIM covers 20+ islands from $19.99.

Brazil

Summer December to March · e-visa required for US, Canadian and Australian travelers

When it's winter up north, it's high summer in Brazil. Beaches are full, the cities are buzzing, and the season builds to two of the biggest parties on Earth.

Visa alert: Brazil brought back visas for US, Canadian and Australian citizens in April 2025, and the rule is still in force. It's an online e-visa, about $81, valid for 10 years with stays of up to 90 days. Apply a few weeks before you fly. Airlines check it at boarding.

For a city-by-city plan, see our Brazil travel guide. Brazil data is cheap. Brazil eSIM plans on the Vivo network start from $6.99.

Costa Rica

Dry season December to April

Costa Rica's dry season lines up almost exactly with northern winter. Guanacaste, the Pacific northwest, has the longest and most reliable dry spell in the country, with sunny days in the 80s°F and very little rain from December well into April.

Timing tip: The first two weeks of December are one of the best-value windows of the year. The dry season has arrived but the Christmas crowds haven't. If you're set on the holidays themselves, book 4 to 6 months ahead. January and February can be windy in Guanacaste, which kitesurfers love and beach loungers don't.

Colombia

Caribbean coast dry season December to March

Colombia keeps climbing up winter wish lists, and the value is hard to beat. December to March is the dry season on the Caribbean coast.

Check-Mig is free. Colombia requires every visitor to fill in the online Check-Mig form between 72 hours and 1 hour before their flight, and airlines can refuse boarding without it. Use the official Migración Colombia website. Lots of lookalike sites charge a fee for something that costs nothing.

Thailand

Cool, dry season November to February

Bangkok is one of the most booked destinations in the world this year, and winter is the best time to go. November through February is the "cool" season: still hot by most standards, but drier and less humid. It's prime time for the Andaman coast islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) and for Chiang Mai in the north.

Two rule changes for 2026: Thailand cut its visa-free stay for US citizens and most other nationalities from 60 days to 30 days in 2026. And every visitor must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arrival, on every entry. Screenshot the QR code it gives you.

Thailand also has some of the cheapest mobile data anywhere. Plans start from $7.99, and you'll find them on our main store along with combined Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia plans if you're doing a regional loop.

How to book winter sun without overpaying

Staying connected on a winter sun trip

Beach trips use less data than you'd think, and more than you'd like at the worst possible moment. Maps, ride-hailing apps, WhatsApp, and uploading photos add up to around 1GB every few days for most people. Video calls and streaming push it much higher. For a one-week beach trip, 3GB to 5GB is plenty. For two weeks or more, or if you work remotely, go for 10GB.

Many US phone plans include Mexico, but in the Caribbean, Brazil, Colombia and Thailand the big carriers' roaming day passes run around $12 a day. A local eSIM is a fraction of that, and you keep your WhatsApp number. If you're not sure whether an eSIM or a physical SIM is right for you, our eSIM vs SIM card guide walks through it.
