Staying connected in Costa Rica

Most Costa Rica trips are a week or two of driving between volcanoes, cloud forest and beaches. US carrier day passes charge for every one of those days, which feels steep when most of your data goes to navigation and WhatsApp. A prepaid eSIM covers the trip with one upfront cost, and you can pick a plan size that matches how much you'll really use.

Live navigation matters more here than in a lot of places. Waze is the app locals and rental companies rely on, and it routes you around closures, construction and the occasional washed-out road during the rainy months. Tour operators, lodges and shuttle drivers mostly coordinate by WhatsApp, so you'll be checking messages all day. You can buy a local SIM at the airport, but an eSIM means you're not standing at a counter while the rental car shuttle waits.

Coverage is good in San José, La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and the Guanacaste beach towns. The far south is a different story. On the Osa Peninsula, signal is limited around Drake Bay and Puerto Jiménez and basically absent inside Corcovado National Park, where many lodges run on their own wifi instead. Data plans here cost more per gigabyte than in much of the world, so it's smart to save big uploads and video calls for your hotel wifi and keep mobile data for maps and messages.

How much data do you need?

Most travelers use their data for Waze, WhatsApp and checking reviews, which is light. A one-week trip is usually fine on 3GB if you back up photos on wifi. For two weeks of driving with daily navigation and some social media, 5GB is a sensible pick. If you're surfing in Santa Teresa and working remotely, or you want to post video regularly, 10GB or 20GB gives you room. Lodges in remote areas often have wifi even when there's no mobile signal.

Best time to visit

The dry season, from about December to April, is peak time, especially on the Pacific side and in Guanacaste, with sunny beach days and the busiest roads. May to November is the green season, with afternoon rain, lush forests, fewer people and some rougher dirt roads. The Caribbean coast around Puerto Viejo runs on its own pattern and is often drier in September and October, when the Pacific side is at its wettest.

Entry tip: US citizens don't need a visa for Costa Rica. The immigration officer stamps your allowed stay on arrival, which can be up to 180 days but is sometimes shorter, so check your passport stamp. Carry proof of onward travel. Official source.

Costa Rica travel tips

Download Waze before you land
Set it up at home and save your hotel addresses. It's the most widely used navigation app in Costa Rica and handles the country's informal addresses better than you'd expect.
Buy Manuel Antonio tickets online
Park entry is sold online only through SINAC, the national parks system, and you can't buy at the gate. Book a few days ahead, especially in the dry season, and bring the ID you used to buy the ticket.
Go offline for the Osa Peninsula
Before heading to Drake Bay or Corcovado, download offline maps and confirm boat and lodge pickups by WhatsApp while you still have signal.
Keep mobile data for the essentials
Costa Rica plans are pricier per gigabyte, so let photos back up on hotel wifi and turn off auto-play video in social apps.

Costa Rica eSIM questions

If you're driving, it's close to essential. Waze needs live data to route around closures and traffic, and most tour operators coordinate by WhatsApp. An eSIM gets you connected before you leave the airport.
Only in parts. There's limited signal in Drake Bay and Puerto Jiménez, and little to none inside Corcovado National Park. Plan to rely on lodge wifi and offline maps there.
Yes. Waze runs over mobile data and works the same as at home. Download it before your trip and log in with your usual account.
No, eSpeedz plans are data-only. WhatsApp calls and messages work over data, which is how most lodges, guides and shuttle companies in Costa Rica communicate anyway.
For a two-week road trip, about 5GB covers navigation, messaging and light social media. Go up to 10GB if you'll be video calling or posting a lot of video.
Yes, you can share your eSIM data with a laptop or tablet. Just keep an eye on usage, since laptops burn through data much faster than phones.
US citizens don't need a visa. Immigration officers can grant up to 180 days but decide the exact number on arrival, so check the stamp in your passport.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Costa Rica. The largest plan is 20GB for 30 days at $112.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
