Portugal eSIM for travelers

A prepaid Portugal eSIM from eSpeedz starts at $7.99 and gives you mobile data on local networks from Lisbon and Porto down to the Algarve coast. You scan the QR code we email you before your flight, and the plan switches on the moment your phone connects in Portugal.

Tram routes, Bolt rides up from the riverfront and every pastel de nata photo you send home, all on one prepaid plan instead of a daily roaming charge.

Staying connected in Portugal

Coming from the US, your carrier's day pass bills you for every day you use your phone abroad, and a week in Lisbon plus a few days in Porto adds up faster than you'd think. On many T-Mobile plans the included international data slows right down once the high-speed allowance runs out, which tends to happen just as you're trying to load directions through the tangle of lanes in Alfama or Ribeira. A Portugal eSIM gives you full-speed local data for the whole trip at one prepaid price.

Portugal runs on apps more than people expect. Bolt and Uber both operate legally under the country's ride-hailing rules in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and Madeira, and they're the easiest way back up a steep hill after dinner. Lisbon's metro, Carris buses and the old yellow trams use the Navegante card, which replaced the Viva Viagem card, though the metro also takes contactless bank cards now. Porto has its own system, the Andante card, for its metro, buses and funicular. Google Maps does the rest, and in a city built on seven hills you'll check it a lot.

Cafe and guesthouse wifi in Lisbon and Porto is generally fine for email and messaging, but it doesn't come with you on a day trip to Sintra, a drive along the Algarve cliffs or a walk through the vineyards of the Douro Valley. Having your own data means you can book a train on your phone, check when the next tram is due and translate a menu without hunting for a password.

How much data do you need?

For a week in Lisbon and Porto with maps, ride apps, messaging and a steady stream of photos, 5GB is usually plenty. If you're driving the Algarve or the Alentejo with navigation running for hours, or posting videos as you go, 10GB gives you breathing room. Two weeks, or working remotely from a Lisbon apartment with daily video calls, points to 20GB, and the 50GB plan is there if you'll tether a laptop. Every Portugal plan lasts 30 days, so you're never racing a short clock.

Best time to visit

Spring (April to June) and early fall (September and October) are the sweet spot: warm enough for the Algarve beaches, mild for walking Lisbon's hills, and calmer than the July and August peak. Summer is hot inland but lovely on the coast. Winter is quiet and rainier in the north, while Madeira stays mild all year, which makes it a popular winter escape.

Entry tip: Portugal is in the Schengen Area, and the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully running since April 10, 2026. If Lisbon is your first Schengen stop, expect a face photo and fingerprint scan at the border in place of a passport stamp. ETIAS, the separate online travel authorization, hasn't launched yet and there's nothing to apply for, so ignore any site asking you to pay for one. Official source.

Portugal travel tips

Get a Navegante card in Lisbon
Buy a Navegante occasional card from a metro ticket machine (there are machines at the airport station). Each traveler needs their own card. Load it with zapping credit or a 24-hour Carris/Metro ticket, or just tap a contactless bank card if you're only riding the metro.
Switch to Andante in Porto
Porto's metro, buses and funicular run on the Andante card, with tourist versions valid for 24 or 72 hours. Your Lisbon Navegante card won't work here, so pick one up when you arrive.
Compare Bolt and Uber before you book
Both apps work across Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and Madeira, and fares move with demand. It takes ten seconds to check both, and in Lisbon Bolt often comes in cheaper.
Install at home, land connected
Scan the QR code on your home wifi a day or two before you leave. The plan won't start until your phone connects in Portugal, so you can order a ride from the arrivals hall at Lisbon or Faro without queuing at a SIM counter.

Portugal eSIM questions

You don't strictly need one, but it's usually the simplest way to stay online the whole trip. Hotel and cafe wifi covers you indoors, while an eSIM keeps maps, ride apps and messaging working on trams, in taxis and on day trips. It also means you're not paying your carrier's daily roaming fee.
Yes. Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal and are served by Portuguese mobile networks, so the plan works there too. As on any mountainous island, signal can fade on remote hiking trails, so download offline maps before a long walk.
Yes, Portugal is included in our Europe eSIM. That's the better pick if Lisbon is one stop on a longer trip through Spain, France or Italy. If you're only visiting Portugal, the Portugal plan is the simpler choice.
Yes. Uber and Bolt only need mobile data and a payment card, and both operate legally in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and Madeira. With an eSIM you can book a ride as soon as you land.
No, eSpeedz plans are data-only, so there's no Portuguese phone number. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime and other internet calling apps work normally over data. You can keep your home SIM switched on for texts if you need them, just watch your carrier's roaming charges for calls.
It will if your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Most recent iPhones, Google Pixels and Samsung Galaxy models support eSIM. If your phone came from a carrier, check that it's unlocked before you buy. The plan starts when you connect in Portugal and lasts 30 days.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Portugal. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $70.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
