Staying connected in Greece

Greece is a trip where you keep moving. A typical itinerary is a couple of days in Athens, a ferry to two or three islands, maybe a hop to Crete, and a roaming day pass from a US carrier charges you for every one of those days. A prepaid Greece eSIM is one fixed cost, and you don't have to think about whether today's island counts as another billable day.

Taxis in Greece are booked by app, but every app hails a licensed taxi rather than a private car. FreeNow is the local favorite in Athens and also runs in Thessaloniki and on islands like Crete, Santorini and Mykonos. Uber and Bolt work in Athens too, and with Uber a regular metered taxi turns up. Athens public transport, including the airport express buses, takes contactless bank cards and phone wallets at the validators, so you can skip the ticket machine. For ferries, Ferryhopper lets you compare operators and keep e-tickets on your phone.

Island hotels and beach bars nearly all have wifi, but it's often shared by a whole building and crawls in the evening when everyone's uploading sunset photos. Ferry wifi is usually paid and slow because it runs over satellite, and on longer crossings like Piraeus to Crete mobile signal drops out in the middle of the sea. The fix is simple: download your e-ticket and offline maps before you board, and let the eSIM pick back up as you approach port.

How much data do you need?

Most island hoppers get through a week on 5GB: maps, ferry apps, taxi apps, messaging and a fair number of photos. If you're making video calls home, uploading reels, or leaning on your own data because the hotel wifi can't keep up, go for 10GB. For two weeks or longer, 20GB is the comfortable choice, and the 50GB plan covers working remotely from an island with a laptop tethered to your phone. All Greece plans run for 30 days.

Best time to visit

Late May to June and September to early October are ideal: the sea is warm, ferries run full schedules, and you dodge the heat and crowds of July and August. From November to March many island hotels and tavernas close and ferry timetables thin out, while Athens and Crete stay lively all year.

Entry tip: Greece uses the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES), fully live since April 10, 2026, so your first Schengen arrival includes a face photo and fingerprint scan instead of a passport stamp. If you connect through another Schengen airport like Frankfurt or Rome, that's where you'll register, and you'll arrive in Athens on what counts as an internal flight. Taking a ferry over from Turkey means doing it at the island port. ETIAS hasn't started yet, so there's nothing to apply for. Official source.

Greece travel tips

Save ferry tickets offline
Most ferry operators issue e-tickets you show on your phone at boarding. Take a screenshot or download the PDF before you leave the hotel, since signal at busy ports like Piraeus can be slow and it often disappears once you're out at sea.
Tap your card on the Athens metro
Athens switched its whole public transport network to contactless payments, so a Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay works at the gates and on the airport express buses. No paper ticket needed.
Use FreeNow for taxis
FreeNow has the biggest pool of licensed taxis in Athens and also covers Thessaloniki, Crete, Santorini and Mykonos. On smaller islands, apps may have few or no drivers, so keep your hotel's taxi number saved.
Skip the SIM counter at the airport
Local prepaid SIMs in Greece have to be registered with your passport at the point of sale. An eSIM installed at home skips that step, so you can walk out of Athens airport and straight to the metro or a taxi.

Greece eSIM questions

It makes island hopping a lot easier. You'll want data for ferry schedules and e-tickets, taxi apps, and maps on islands where street names are hard to find. One eSIM covers the mainland and the islands, so you're not buying anything new at each stop.
Yes. It works across Greece wherever local mobile coverage reaches, including the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese and the Ionian islands. Signal is strong in ports and towns but can fade on remote beaches, mountain roads and in the middle of long ferry crossings.
Yes, Greece is included in our Europe eSIM, which is the better choice if Athens is one stop on a longer trip through Italy, Croatia or beyond. Some of our Europe plans also include Turkey, handy if you're crossing by ferry between the Turkish coast and islands like Kos or Rhodes. Check the country list before you buy.
Yes, but it books a licensed yellow taxi on the meter, not a private car. FreeNow and Bolt work the same way, and FreeNow usually has the most drivers. All three need mobile data, which is where the eSIM comes in.
No, it's data-only, so there's no Greek phone number. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime and other calling apps work fine over data, which covers messaging hotels and ferry companies. Keep your home SIM on for bank texts if you need them, but switch off its data roaming.
Yes, as long as it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Install the plan at home from our QR code email, and it activates automatically when you connect in Greece. Each plan lasts 30 days from that first connection.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Greece. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $69.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
