Staying connected in the United Kingdom

London runs on contactless. You tap your phone or card on the Tube and buses, black cabs take card, and so do most pubs and market stalls. That makes your phone your wallet, map and ticket all at once, so losing data hurts more here than in most cities. Paying AT&T or Verizon $12 a day for that connection adds up fast on a 10-day trip, and T-Mobile's included basic data at up to 256kbps makes Citymapper feel like dial-up.

Picking up a UK SIM is simple compared with much of Europe, since you won't need to register it with your passport. It's still an errand for your first afternoon, though, and if your trip continues to Paris, Dublin or Amsterdam, UK SIMs are no longer covered by the EU's free roaming rules. An eSIM installed at home means you're connected from the jet bridge.

Wifi is easy to find in hotels, cafes and chain restaurants. Underground, the whole Elizabeth line has mobile signal and TfL has been switching on 4G and 5G across Tube stations and tunnels, aiming to cover the full network by the end of 2026. The gaps are outside the cities: the Scottish Highlands, mid-Wales and parts of the Lake District can drop to one bar or none, so download offline maps before any road trip.

How much data do you need?

London uses more data than you'd think because you're navigating constantly: Citymapper, Google Maps, theater tickets, restaurant bookings and rideshare apps. For one week, 5GB is comfortable for most visitors. For two weeks with day trips to Bath, Oxford or Edinburgh and lots of photo sharing, 10GB gives you breathing room. If you'll be streaming football in the pub or working from cafes, look at 20GB or 50GB.

Best time to visit

May through September brings the longest days and your best odds of dry weather, though dry is relative here. August is festival month in Edinburgh, which means great energy and very high hotel prices. London works year-round, with Christmas lights and markets in December, and the countryside is at its prettiest in late spring when everything turns green.

Entry tip: US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK, and you also need one if you pass through UK border control on a connection. Apply through the official GOV.UK service or the UK ETA app before you travel. Official source.

United Kingdom travel tips

Get your ETA from the official source
US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to visit the UK. Apply through GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app, not a third-party site that adds its own fee. It's tied to your passport, so a new passport means a new ETA.
Use the same card or phone for every tap
TfL caps your daily and weekly fares on contactless, but only when you tap the same card or device every time. Tapping your phone's wallet one trip and the physical card the next counts as two different people, and you lose the cap.
Book intercity trains in advance
Advance fares on routes like London to Edinburgh or York are often far cheaper than buying on the day. Trainline and the National Rail app show live platforms and delays, which helps at big London stations where platforms are announced shortly before departure.
Visiting Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man?
These islands aren't part of the UK itself. Our 41-country Europe plan lists Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man by name, so it's the safer pick if they're on your itinerary.

United Kingdom eSIM questions

You don't need one, but it's the easiest way to avoid roaming charges. AT&T and Verizon charge $12 a day for their international passes, while a prepaid eSIM covers the whole trip for one price.
Yes. Both eSpeedz Europe plans include the UK, which makes sense if you're also heading to the continent. If you're only visiting the UK, the UK plan gives you the same amount of data for less.
It works wherever the Tube has mobile signal. The Elizabeth line is fully covered, and TfL is rolling out 4G and 5G across the rest of the stations and tunnels with a target of the whole network by the end of 2026. On stretches that aren't live yet, you'll reconnect at the next covered station.
Yes, the UK plan covers all four nations. Signal is strong in cities and towns but can be weak in remote parts of the Highlands and rural Wales, just as it is for locals.
Yes. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime work over the eSIM's data connection, so you can message and call home the same way you do in the US.
No, eSpeedz plans are data-only with no phone number. Calls and messages go through apps like WhatsApp and FaceTime instead.
Most recent iPhones, Pixels and Samsung Galaxy phones support eSIM. Your phone needs to be eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked. You can check on an iPhone under Settings, General, About, where an unlocked phone shows No SIM restrictions under Carrier Lock.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for the United Kingdom. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $56.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
