Staying connected in Ireland

A lot of Ireland trips are ten days or more, and most of them involve a rental car. On a US carrier day pass you pay for every one of those days, and on many T-Mobile plans the included data slows down once you've used the high-speed allowance, which is not what you want on a single-track road in Kerry with the satnav thinking. A prepaid Ireland eSIM covers the whole trip for one price.

Two things make Ireland a little different. First, coverage: Dublin, Cork, Galway and the larger towns are well connected, but along the Wild Atlantic Way signal gets thin on remote stretches of Connemara, the Kerry peninsulas and the Donegal coast, so download offline maps before you set off each morning. Second, the border. Belfast, the Giant's Causeway and the rest of Northern Ireland are in the UK. Our Ireland plan is built for the Republic of Ireland, so if your loop crosses the border, our Europe eSIM, which covers both Ireland and the UK, is the safer pick.

In Dublin, taxis are booked through FreeNow, Bolt or Uber, and all three send a licensed taxi on the regulated meter. FreeNow also runs in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Kerry. For buses and trains, the TFI Go app sells tickets on your phone. Hotel, B&B and pub wifi is easy to find, but it's no help on the road between them, and that's where you'll use your data most.

How much data do you need?

In Ireland, navigation is the big data user because so many trips are road trips. A week split between Dublin and a few day trips is comfortable on 5GB. A 10 to 14 day loop around the Wild Atlantic Way, with maps running every day, music streaming in the car and photos going up each evening, fits 10GB better. If you'll stream shows at night or tether a laptop, the 20GB plan is the biggest Ireland option, and like every Ireland plan it runs for 30 days.

Best time to visit

May through September brings the longest days and the best odds of dry weather for driving the coast, with July and August the busiest months. April and October are quieter and just as green. Whatever month you pick, pack a rain jacket, because the weather in the west can change several times in an afternoon.

Entry tip: Ireland isn't in the Schengen Area, so the EU's new EES fingerprint registration doesn't apply when you land in Dublin or Shannon, and passports are still stamped by hand. If your trip crosses into Northern Ireland, though, that's the UK: US citizens who don't live in Ireland need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before crossing, even though there's no checkpoint on the road. Ireland travel tips

Download offline maps for the west coast
Before each driving day, save the area in Google Maps or your maps app of choice. Signal comes and goes in Connemara valleys and on the Kerry and Donegal coasts, and offline maps keep the directions going when it drops.
Grab a Leap Visitor Card in Dublin
It gives unlimited travel on Dublin Bus, Luas trams, DART and commuter rail in the city zone for 24 hours, 72 hours or 7 days, counted from your first tap. You can buy it at Dublin Airport, and it works on Dublin Bus routes to the airport but not on the private airport coaches.
Any taxi app gets you the same taxi
FreeNow, Bolt and Uber all book licensed taxis that charge the regulated meter fare, and every taxi has to accept cards. Pick whichever app shows a car closest to you.
Leave time for US Preclearance on the way home
Flights to the US from Dublin and Shannon clear US immigration and customs before you board, so give yourself about three hours at the airport. The upside is you land in the US as a domestic passenger. If you use Global Entry or the Mobile Passport Control app, have them ready.

Ireland eSIM questions

If you're driving, it's close to essential. You'll want live navigation, weather and the odd restaurant search on roads where wifi doesn't exist. In Dublin alone you could get by on wifi, but taxi apps and maps are much easier with your own data.
Our Ireland plan is meant for the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland, including Belfast and the Giant's Causeway, is part of the UK, so if your trip crosses the border, choose our Europe eSIM, which covers both Ireland and the UK.
In towns and on the busier sections, yes. On the remotest stretches of Connemara, the Kerry peninsulas and the Donegal coast, signal can be thin or missing. Download offline maps before you drive and you'll be fine.
Yes, Ireland is in our Europe eSIM. It's the better fit if you're pairing Ireland with London, Edinburgh or mainland Europe, or crossing into Northern Ireland.
Yes, but Uber in Ireland books licensed taxis on the meter, the same as FreeNow and Bolt. FreeNow has the longest track record in Dublin. All of them need mobile data, so set up your eSIM before you land.
No, it's a data-only plan with no Irish number. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime work normally over data, which is how most B&B hosts and tour operators prefer to message anyway. Keep your home SIM on if you need bank verification texts.
It will if your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. We email a QR code within minutes, you install it at home, and it connects automatically when you arrive in Ireland. The plan's 30 days start from that first connection.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Ireland. The largest plan is 20GB for 30 days at $31.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
