Turkey eSIM for tourists and travelers

eSpeedz Turkey eSIM plans start at $7.99 for prepaid data on local networks in Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Aegean coast and beyond. Buy and install it before you leave home, because many foreign eSIM websites are blocked inside Turkey, and it switches on when your phone connects there.

Turkey has its own rules for phones and eSIMs. Sort your data out at home and you'll land in Istanbul ready to book a taxi, tap through the metro and find your way out of the Grand Bazaar.

Staying connected in Turkey

Turkey isn't in the EU, so European roam-like-at-home deals don't apply here, and some Europe-wide data plans leave Turkey out entirely. From the US, a carrier day pass bills you for every day you use your phone, and a typical Turkey trip of Istanbul, Cappadocia and a stretch of coast is rarely short. A Turkey eSIM gives you local data for the whole trip at one prepaid price.

Two Turkey-specific rules are worth knowing. Since July 2025, the country's telecom regulator has blocked access from inside Turkey to the websites and apps of dozens of foreign eSIM providers. eSIMs installed before arrival keep working; what fails is trying to buy or set one up after you land, so install yours at home. Second, foreign phones can be used on Turkish networks for up to 120 days before the handset has to be registered (the IMEI rule). A vacation of a few weeks sits well inside that window, and the 2026 crackdown targets people who swapped SIMs between slots to stretch the limit, not regular tourists.

In Istanbul, Uber and the local app BiTaksi both send official licensed taxis, which saves you from negotiating fares at the curb. The Istanbulkart covers the metro, trams, buses, funiculars and Bosphorus ferries. Contactless bank cards and phone wallets work at many metro and tram gates but cost more per ride, and the Marmaray line under the Bosphorus still needs an Istanbulkart. Free wifi at Istanbul Airport asks for an SMS code or passport check at a kiosk, which is one more reason to arrive with your own data running.

How much data do you need?

A week in Istanbul with maps, taxi apps, translation and photo uploads is comfortable on 5GB. If you're adding Cappadocia and the coast, using your phone for navigation on a road trip, or making video calls home, 10GB fits better. For two weeks or longer, 20GB gives you room to stop rationing, and the 50GB plan suits remote workers or anyone tethering a laptop. Every Turkey plan lasts 30 days.

Best time to visit

April to early June and September to October are the most comfortable months: pleasant for walking Istanbul, good weather for Cappadocia, and still warm enough for the coast. July and August are hot, especially inland at Pamukkale and Ephesus, while the Aegean and Mediterranean beaches are at their busiest. Winter is quieter in Istanbul, and Cappadocia can see snow.

Entry tip: US citizens with ordinary passports don't need a visa or e-visa for Turkey and can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Turkey isn't part of Schengen, so the EU's EES fingerprint registration doesn't apply on arrival, but it will when you take a ferry across to a Greek island or fly on to a Schengen country. Turkey travel tips

Install your eSIM before you fly
Because many foreign eSIM provider sites and apps are blocked inside Turkey, do the whole setup at home on wifi: buy, scan the QR code, and check it appears in your phone's settings. It'll activate automatically when you land.
Get an Istanbulkart early
One card works across Istanbul's metro, trams, buses, funiculars and city ferries, and it's cheaper per ride than tapping a foreign bank card. You'll need it for the Marmaray line, which doesn't accept bank cards.
Book taxis with Uber or BiTaksi
Both apps dispatch licensed yellow, turquoise or black taxis on the meter. You see the driver and route in advance, which takes the guesswork out of airport and late-night rides.
Staying four months or more? Plan for IMEI registration
Foreign phones can be used on Turkish networks for 120 days before registration is required. Short trips aren't affected, but digital nomads and long-stay visitors should look into registering their phone through the official e-Devlet process.

Turkey eSIM questions

Yes, as long as your phone supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked, and you install the eSIM before you arrive. Once it's installed, it connects to a local network automatically when you land. The plan's 30 days start from that first connection.
No. Turkey hasn't banned eSIM technology. Since 2025 its regulator has blocked access to many foreign eSIM providers' websites and apps from inside the country, which makes buying or setting one up after arrival difficult. Install yours at home and it'll connect normally in Turkey.
Not for a normal vacation. Foreign phones can be used on Turkish networks for up to 120 days before registration is required, so the rule really affects people staying four months or longer.
Some of our Europe eSIM plans include Turkey and some don't, because Turkey isn't in the EU. If Turkey is your main stop, the Turkey plan is the straightforward choice. If you're combining it with Greece or other countries, check the Europe plan's country list before you buy.
Yes. Uber in Istanbul books official licensed taxis rather than private cars, and BiTaksi works the same way. Both need mobile data, which your eSIM provides from the moment you land.
No, it's data-only, so there's no Turkish phone number. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime all work over data, so you can still message your hotel or tour guide. Keep your home SIM on if you need bank texts.
Not for tourism. US citizens with ordinary passports can visit Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with no e-visa needed.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Turkey. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $50.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
