Staying connected in the United Arab Emirates

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are built around apps. You'll book rides on Careem or Uber, check Metro times on the RTA Dubai app, reserve restaurant tables and show tickets for attractions on your screen. Malls and hotels almost always have free wifi, and you'll spend a lot of time in both, especially in the hotter months. The gaps are everything in between: taxi queues, beach clubs, the desert and the walk from the Metro to your hotel in 40-degree heat.

One thing catches many visitors out. WhatsApp voice and video calls, and most other internet calling apps, are blocked on UAE mobile networks and on most wifi. Messaging, photos and voice notes still work normally. Some travel eSIMs route data outside the country and avoid the block, but we can't promise that for these plans, so download Botim, a licensed calling app in the UAE, as a backup if calls home matter to you.

US carrier roaming works in the UAE, but daily passes add up quickly on a long stay or a stopover that turns into a week. Local tourist SIMs need a passport and a counter visit after you land. An eSIM you've already installed means you can skip both and book your ride from the baggage hall.

How much data do you need?

With wifi in nearly every mall, hotel and restaurant, the UAE is easy on data. A week of rides, maps and messaging usually fits in 3GB to 5GB. For two weeks, or if you post a lot of video from the desert and the skyline, 10GB is more relaxed. Staying longer for work? The 10GB 60-day plan gives you room without needing to top up mid-trip.

Best time to visit

November to March is the time to go, with warm sunny days and pleasant evenings for the beach, desert camps and outdoor dining. From June to September temperatures regularly pass 40°C and life moves indoors, though hotel prices drop too. During Ramadan, which falls in February and March in 2027, restaurants and attractions keep different hours, so check before you plan.

Entry tip: US citizens with a regular passport get a free visa on arrival for stays of up to 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Official source.

United Arab Emirates travel tips

Get a Nol card for Dubai transport
The Nol card covers the Dubai Metro, tram, buses and water buses. Buy one at any Metro station ticket office or machine and top it up as you go. Remember that Abu Dhabi runs its own system, so your Nol card won't work on buses there.
Careem and Uber both work
Careem started in Dubai and handles rides, food delivery and more in one app, and Uber also operates across the UAE. Set up your account and payment before you fly so you can book a car straight from the airport.
Plan for blocked calls
WhatsApp and FaceTime calling are generally blocked on local networks, though messages and voice notes go through. Botim is licensed for calls in the UAE, so it's a reliable fallback for reaching family at home.
Day trip to Oman?
Musandam and the border towns are tempting add-ons from Dubai or Ras Al Khaimah, but this plan only covers the UAE. If you cross into Oman, our GCC plan covers both countries.

United Arab Emirates eSIM questions

You don't need one, but it makes Dubai much easier. Rides, Metro times, restaurant bookings and attraction tickets all run through apps. Wifi is everywhere indoors, but you'll want data outside and on the move.
WhatsApp messages work, but voice and video calls are blocked on UAE networks and most wifi. Some travel eSIMs that route data abroad get around this, but it isn't guaranteed. Bring Botim as a backup for calls.
No, it's data-only with no UAE number. You can message on WhatsApp and iMessage over data. Keep your home SIM switched on with roaming data off if you need verification texts from your bank.
No advance visa is needed for short tourist trips. US citizens with a regular passport receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. Your passport needs at least six months of validity left when you land.
Most people use 3GB to 5GB in a week. Malls, hotels and restaurants all have wifi, so mobile data mostly goes on maps, ride apps and social posts while you're out.
Yes. The plan covers the whole UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and the desert areas near the cities. It doesn't cover neighboring Oman.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for the United Arab Emirates. The largest plan is 20GB for 30 days at $86.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
