Staying connected in Spain

Spain requires every prepaid SIM to be registered to a passport or ID, so even the airport kiosks in Madrid and Barcelona will scan your passport before handing one over. Roaming on your US plan avoids the paperwork but not the cost: AT&T and Verizon both charge $12 a day, and T-Mobile's included data runs at up to 256kbps, which is slow when you're trying to pull up a train ticket at the gate.

Spain's trains are excellent and very app-driven. Renfe runs most routes, and on several high-speed lines from Madrid you can also ride with Iryo or Ouigo, which often undercut each other on price. In the big cities, the Spanish ride-hailing app Cabify works alongside Uber and FREENOW. Plenty of small businesses, from tapas bars to surf schools, take bookings over WhatsApp.

Free wifi is easy to find in cafes and hotels, though it's rarely fast enough for video calls at peak hours. Mobile coverage is strong in cities and along the coasts, but it gets patchier in the mountains, think the Pyrenees, the Picos de Europa and the Alpujarras, and between villages on the quieter stages of the Camino de Santiago.

Where it works in Spain

Plans connect to leading local 4G/5G networks in Spain. Popular stops for travelers:

Madrid
Barcelona
Seville
Valencia
Granada
Málaga
San Sebastián
Bilbao
Mallorca
Canary Islands

How much data do you need?

A week in Spain usually fits in 3 to 5GB: maps, train tickets, restaurant searches and messaging. Two weeks of city-hopping between Madrid, Andalusia and Barcelona with daily photo uploads is comfortable on 10GB. If you're settling into Valencia or Málaga as a remote worker, the 20GB or 50GB plan makes more sense, and every plan runs a full 30 days.

Best time to visit

Spring (April to June) and fall (September and October) are ideal almost everywhere. July and August are scorching in Seville, Córdoba and Madrid, and the beaches fill with European holidaymakers, while the green north around San Sebastián, Asturias and Galicia stays milder. The Canary Islands stay warm through winter, which makes them a popular escape from November to March.

Entry tip: Spain is part of the EU's Entry/Exit System, which replaced passport stamps for non-EU visitors and has been fully operational since April 10, 2026. Your face and fingerprints are recorded the first time you enter the Schengen area, so allow extra time at passport control. Official source.

Spain travel tips

Book the Alhambra and Sagrada Família early
Both use timed tickets that sell out, sometimes weeks ahead in peak season. Alhambra tickets are issued in your name and checked against your passport at the entrance, so bring it with you.
Compare train operators before you book
On routes from Madrid, check Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo side by side. Fares change a lot by operator and departure time, and all three give you a ticket you can show from your phone.
Eat on Spanish time
Lunch runs roughly 2 to 4 pm, and dinner rarely starts before 9 pm, especially in Madrid and the south. Many kitchens close between services, so check hours on Google Maps or TheFork before you set out hungry at 6.
Walking the Camino?
Download offline maps and your albergue bookings before each stage. Signal comes and goes between villages, and WhatsApp messages to your next host will send as soon as you're back in range.

Spain eSIM questions

Not strictly, but it saves you a passport-registration stop at a phone shop and the $12-a-day roaming passes from AT&T and Verizon. You install it before you fly and it connects when you land.
10GB is a comfortable amount for two weeks of maps, train apps, WhatsApp and regular photo posts. Light users who lean on hotel wifi can manage on 5GB, while video lovers should look at 20GB.
Yes, but you'll need to show your passport so the SIM can be registered, as Spanish law requires. With an eSIM, that step disappears and you're online before you clear the terminal.
Yes. The Balearic and Canary Islands are part of Spain, so the Spain plan covers them just like the mainland.
No, the Spain plan covers Spain only. For a multi-country trip, look at our Europe plans: Portugal is in both families, but France and Gibraltar are only in the 41-country plan, which matters if you're planning a day trip to the Rock.
Yes. WhatsApp runs over the eSIM's data connection, and you'll probably use it a lot in Spain for restaurant bookings, tour pickups and messages from your host. iMessage and FaceTime work too.
No, eSpeedz plans are data-only with no phone number. Calls and messages work through WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime and similar apps. Your phone needs to be eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Spain. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $56.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
