Staying connected in Italy

Italy has required passport registration for prepaid SIMs since 2005, so buying one means a queue at a phone shop or airport counter, handing over your passport, and often having a codice fiscale, the Italian tax code, generated for you on the spot. It works, but it isn't how you want to spend your first hour in Rome. Staying on your US plan isn't much better: AT&T and Verizon both charge $12 a day, which can add more than $100 to a two-week trip.

So much of Italy runs through your phone now. Trenitalia and Italo sell the high-speed train tickets, TheFork handles restaurant bookings, and WhatsApp is how agriturismo hosts, boat tour operators and drivers will reach you. In Rome and Milan you can book licensed taxis through apps like FREENOW or itTaxi, and you'll find Uber far more limited than at home.

Hotel wifi in older buildings is often patchy, and free public wifi usually wants a sign-up before it lets you in. Mobile coverage is strong in cities and along the main rail lines, but the Dolomites, inland Tuscany and stretches of the Amalfi Coast road have dead spots between towns. Download offline Google Maps before any driving day.

How much data do you need?

Italy is a photo-heavy trip, and most people post and back up as they go. For one week, 5GB covers maps, train apps, WhatsApp and moderate social media. For two weeks, especially with a Tuscan road trip or lots of video, 10 to 20GB is the safer pick. On a smaller plan, turn off automatic photo backup over cellular and let it sync on hotel wifi overnight.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are the best months for most of Italy, with warm days and fewer crowds. July and August bring real heat in Rome and Florence and peak crowds on the coasts, and many Italians take their own holidays around Ferragosto in mid-August. Winter is quiet and good value for cities and museums, and it's ski season in the Dolomites.

Entry tip: Italy checks non-EU visitors through the EU's Entry/Exit System, fully operational since April 10, 2026. If Italy is your first Schengen stop, expect to have your fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border instead of a passport stamp. Official source.

Italy travel tips

Watch for ZTL zones if you rent a car
Most historic centers, including Florence, Rome and Bologna, are camera-enforced limited traffic zones called ZTL. Follow your GPS straight into one and a fine can arrive by mail months later. If your hotel is inside a ZTL, ask them before arrival whether they can register your plate.
Validate paper train tickets before boarding
Paper regional train tickets have to be stamped in the validation machines at the station before you get on, or you risk a fine. Buying in the Trenitalia or Italo app keeps the ticket on your phone, which is one more reason to have data at the station.
Book the big sights on your phone
The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Last Supper in Milan sell timed tickets that often sell out, and you'll show a QR code at the entrance. Take a screenshot too, because signal can dip in a crowded queue.
Don't be surprised by the coperto
Many restaurants add a coperto, a per-person cover charge for bread and table service. It's normal and listed on the menu, and tipping on top is optional.

Italy eSIM questions

You don't need one, but it's the simplest way to have data without roaming fees or a trip to a phone shop. Local SIMs require passport registration, while an eSIM is installed from home before you fly.
Yes, there are mobile shops at major Italian airports, but you'll need your passport to register the SIM and may face a wait after a long flight. An eSIM lets you skip that line and be online before you reach the taxi rank.
Around 10GB suits most two-week trips with maps, train apps, messaging and daily photo sharing. If you post a lot of video or will be navigating a rental car every day, go for 20GB.
Yes, Italy is included in both eSpeedz Europe plan families. If your trip also takes in France, choose the 41-country Europe plan, since the 35-area plan doesn't cover France. For Italy alone, the Italy plan is the better value.
Yes. WhatsApp works over the eSIM's data connection, and it's the app Italian hosts, guides and drivers commonly use to message visitors. iMessage and FaceTime work too.
No, it's a data-only plan with no Italian phone number. You can call and text over data with WhatsApp, iMessage or FaceTime.
Install it at home a day or two before your flight while you're on wifi. The plan only starts when it connects to a network in Italy, so installing early doesn't cost you any days. Your phone must be eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked.
eSpeedz doesn't sell unlimited plans for Italy. The largest plan is 50GB for 30 days at $56.99, which covers maps, social media and video calls for most trips. Many plans sold as unlimited slow down after a daily fair-use limit, so compare the fine print.
